In order to provide comprehensive protection for victims and to combat gender-based and domestic violence, diverse actors and agencies need to be brought together. In Brandenburg there are already many round tables, working circles, and working groups that come together regularly to work to advance the state’s provisions for protection from violence.

The text of the Istanbul Convention was originally formulated in a way that only recognized two binary genders. The Bündnis Istanbul Konvention (Istanbul Convention Alliance) published a position paper in 2023 that brings this formulation in line with a diverse understanding of gender [only available in German].
Gender-based violence means violent behaviour inflicted upon an individual or group of individuals due to their gender identity. This term is used in order to highlight that societal structures affect a person’s risk of experiencing certain forms of violence. Those who suffer most are women and girls, trans, non-binary, and intersex persons, but so do people who do not comply with certain social norms or fit into a binary gender system.
